Moving Out? A Complete Move-Out Cleanout Checklist

Whether you're leaving a rental or selling your house, the move-out cleanout is the part everyone dreads. You've packed the stuff you're keeping, and now you're staring at everything you're not. Here's how to handle it without losing your security deposit or delaying closing.

Start with the big stuff

Old furniture is the biggest move-out headache. That couch you bought for the apartment five years ago isn't worth moving to the new place. Same with the wobbly desk, the guest bed nobody uses, and the dresser with the broken drawer. Make a list of large items you're leaving behind. These are haul items.

Room-by-room sweep

  • Kitchen: check every cabinet, the space above the fridge, under the sink. Toss old food, cleaning supplies you won't move, and anything expired.
  • Bathroom: medicine cabinet, under the vanity, shower caddies. Old toiletries and medications go in the trash (medications to a Walgreens drop box).
  • Closets: wire hangers, shoes you forgot about, boxes from the top shelf you never opened since the last move.
  • Basement and storage: this is where the bulk of forgotten stuff lives. Water-damaged boxes, holiday decorations, old tools.
  • Garage: half-empty paint cans, yard chemicals, broken tools, scrap wood.

What landlords check

If you're renting, your landlord will do a walkthrough. They're looking for damage, cleanliness, and whether you left anything behind. In Illinois, anything you leave behind becomes the landlord's problem and they can deduct removal costs from your security deposit. Hauling it yourself (or hiring a hauler) before the walkthrough protects your deposit.

What sellers need to know

If you're selling your home, the purchase agreement usually requires broom-clean condition at closing. That means no personal belongings left behind. Buyers can delay closing or demand credits if the house isn't empty. Don't let a pile of junk in the basement hold up a six-figure transaction.

Timeline it

  • Two weeks before move-out: walk through and tag everything you're not taking.
  • One week before: donate usable items to Goodwill, Salvation Army, or Habitat ReStore in Rockford.
  • Two to three days before: schedule junk removal for the haul pile.
  • Day before walkthrough: final sweep, vacuum, wipe down surfaces.
