What to Do Before a Garage Sale (And What to Haul Away After)

Garage sales are great for turning clutter into cash. But most people underestimate the setup and completely forget about what happens to the leftovers. Here's how to run a garage sale in Rockford without it turning into a second mess.

Before the sale: prep work

• Start sorting two weeks early. Go room by room and pull everything you want to sell into one staging area (garage or spare room).
• Price everything the night before. Use masking tape and a marker. Don't overthink it. If you haven't used it in a year, price it to move.
• Group similar items on tables: kitchen stuff together, tools together, kids' stuff together. Shoppers browse faster when things are organized.

During the sale: keep it simple

• Have bags and boxes ready for buyers who grab multiple small items.

After the sale: the leftover problem

This is where most people get stuck. The sale ends, you made some money, and now you're staring at half the stuff still sitting in the driveway. Here's what to do with it.

• Donate first. Goodwill on East State, Salvation Army on Charles Street, and Habitat ReStore on 11th Street all accept furniture, clothes, tools, and household goods in working condition. Some will pick up large items if you call ahead.
• Recycle what you can. Cardboard from boxes, scrap metal, and electronics go to Winnebago County drop sites or Behr Iron and Metal.
• Haul the rest. Broken furniture, stained mattresses, random junk that nobody wanted. Don't drag it back into the garage. That defeats the whole point.

Schedule the haul before the sale

Here's the move most people miss: book your junk removal before you even hold the sale. Pick a time slot for the day after. That way, whatever doesn't sell goes straight onto the truck instead of back into storage.
